Spiral Universe is a dot-com startup company developing student information system software for school management, social networking, and education-based applications. The company is based in White Plains, New York. The flagship product is called Spiral, an Ajax desktop environment rich Internet application (also known as a "webtop") hosted by the company and available for free under the web portal model of charging for support and services.[1] The software is currently in private beta. Features include admissions, alumni, calendar, course management, email, file storage, gradebook, medical records, report cards and transcripts, reporting, and scheduling.
The Arizona Charter Schools Association has entered into a partnership with the company to provide Spiral's software to its member schools. [2]
Spiral runs on Linux, PostgreSQL, Java, Spring Framework, Tomcat, and Ext/Google Web Toolkit (GXT).[1] The system uses 128-bit TLS encryption. All passwords on the system are SHA1 hash protected. Information transferred through the system is protected using RC4 encryption.[3] The software is compatible with the Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF).[4]
Non-free competitors include Powerschool and Blackboard.
