On my experience, all you need to rank in Yahoo is to own the EMD/keyword. Even if it's a .net or .org, after a few months, you will rank on the first page of yahoo and bing (yahoo now uses bing results so it's the same thing).
So my advice is that if you want to rank on bing/yahoo you should Not promote your site.. don't do any link building at all. I know it's hard to belive
