If you verify your website in Google Webmaster then it's easy for you.

Step 1 - Login you Google Webmaster

Step 2 - Click "Link to Your Site" option

Step 3 - Download Table and Filter Spam URL

Step 4 - Create .txt file with name disavow and add all spam URL

Step 5 - now import file in Google Disavow tool

Use Google Webmasters and top backlink checkers to get the complete report of your backlink profile and start analyzing each link that are pointing to your site.

The following type of links should be removed from backlinks because Google counts them as spammy links-
1) links coming from pоrn or irrelevant site
2) Paid/Affiliate backlinks
3) Links with over optimized anchor texts
4) Links from websites that have been penalized by Google
5) Site-wide backlinks
6) Low-quality directory or bookmark site links
7) Spammy blog comments, forum signature link

I suspect they were using their internal search engine tools (aka the Matt Cutts dashboard).

If your site is verified in Google Webmaster Tools, it will show backlinks.  There are also tools like Majestic SEO, Ahrefs.com and Open Site Explorer.

They won't tell you which links are 'spammy' though.  Basically, any links you build yourself are spammy.
