To be a successful SEO (Search Engine Optimization) specialist, there are several key competencies and characteristics you should develop:

Understanding of Core SEO Principles: A strong foundation in the basics of SEO is critical. This includes understanding the significance of keywords, the role of quality content, the importance of link building, and the impact of website design on SEO. You should also constantly stay up to-date with the latest SEO updates and algorithm changes.

Technical Skills: These include an understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as knowledge about website diagnostics and SEO analytics tools. Proficiency in CMS platforms like WordPress is also beneficial.

Analytical Thinking: SEOers have to analyze complex data to make strategic keyword planning decisions. This requires abilities in Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and other SEO monitoring tools.

Content Creation: High-quality, relevant content is integral to SEO. You should know how to create and optimize content not only for search engines but also for the audiences you're trying to reach.

SEO Strategy Development: Successful SEOers know how to develop a coherent and effective SEO strategy. This involves planning an approach based on keyword research, competitor analysis, and technical SEO audits.

Patience and Flexibility: SEO is a long-term process, and results may not be immediate. Flexibility is important since SEO strategies may need to be adjusted based on algorithm changes or the results of your efforts.

Collaborative Skills: As an SEO specialist, you'll often find yourself working with marketers, developers, content writers, and other team members. Good collaboration and communication skills are thus crucial.

Continuous Learning: Due to the dynamic nature of SEO, it's essential to keep learning and staying up to date with the latest trends, tool updates, and any changes in search engines' algorithms.

Problem-Solving Skills: SEO involves a lot of problem-solving. If a website isn't ranking as expected, you'll need to be able to diagnose the problem and implement effective solutions.

Here are a few more skills and attributes that can pave the path to success for an SEO professional:

Comprehending User Behavior: As search engine algorithms increasingly prioritize user experience, understanding user behavior patterns and engagement metrics is vital. SEOs should adapt strategies based on how users navigate websites and consume content.

Local SEO Knowledge: For businesses catering to specific geographical regions, understanding local SEO becomes critical. This includes managing local business listings, collecting online reviews, and optimizing for local keywords.

Mobile SEO: With the increasing use of smartphones, mobile search has surpassed desktop. SEOs should be skilled in making a website mobile-friendly, dealing with mobile usability issues, and optimizing for mobile search.

Understanding of Semantic Search: Google's algorithms are increasingly relying on semantic search, which is its ability to consider the intent, context, and meaning behind search terms when serving results. SEOs must know how to optimize for such intents.

Project Management Skills: An SEO professional often juggles multiple projects and tasks, such as managing website updates, optimizing content, and performing link-building activities. To manage these effectively, they need good project management skills.

Basic Design and UX Knowledge: Although not directly a part of SEO, understanding principles of good design and user experience can help build more effective, engaging websites. Better User Experience often leads to improved engagement metrics, which indirectly helps SEO.

Knowledge About Core Web Vitals: Core Web Vitals are a set of factors that Google considers important in a webpage's overall user experience. These include loading time (LCP - Largest Contentful Paint), interactivity (FID - First Input Delay), and visual stability (CLS - Cumulative Layout Shift). SEOs should know how to optimize for these factors.

Backlink Building and Analysis: Quality backlinks can significantly boost a site's SEO performance. SEO professionals should have a thorough understanding of how to acquire good backlinks and analyze a site's backlink profile for potential improvements.

Legal Knowledge: Awareness of legal aspects related to web content such as GDPR, DMCA, and knowledge about the limitations and rules for storing user data, can keep websites out of legal trouble and ensure SEO efforts are compliant.

Ethics and Integrity: Using ethical ("white hat") techniques is critical. Shortcuts and manipulative tactics ("black hat" SEO) might have short-term gains but can lead to penalties and even being banned by search algorithms in the long run.

more qualifications that set successful SEO professionals apart:

Competitor Analysis: The ability to evaluate and study your competitors' online strategies can help you find opportunities for improvement, refine your SEO plan, and ultimately gain an edge.

Platform Expertise: Though WordPress dominates the market, it's certainly not the only CMS out there. Knowledge of platforms like Joomla, Drupal, Squarespace, and Shopify can be beneficial. Also, understanding the features, advantages, and SEO pros/cons of various e-commerce platforms will be significant if you're in the e-commerce sector.

Voice Search Optimization: With the increasing use of virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant, optimizing for voice search has become crucial. The shift from typing to speaking can significantly impact keyword strategies and requires a good understanding of conversational queries.

Video SEO: As video content continues to grow in popularity, understanding how to optimize video content for search engines is a valuable skill.

Structured Data Understanding: Structured data, or Schema markup, can help search engines better understand your content and provide more informative search results. SEOs should know how to implement and use structured data to their advantage.

International SEO: If you're working with global brands or aiming to expand a business internationally, knowledge of international SEO is a must. This involves understanding how to optimize websites for different countries and languages.

Ability to Measure SEO Success: It's not enough just to implement SEO strategies; you must also track their performance and make data-driven decisions. This involves setting up and understanding key performance indicators (KPIs) and using tracking tools to measure these KPIs.

Social Media Skills: Social media doesn't directly impact SEO rankings, but it can indirectly influence it by driving traffic to your website and improving brand visibility. SEOs should understand how to leverage social media platforms as part of a broader digital marketing strategy.

Creativity and Innovation: The best SEO professionals are those who think outside the box to come up with unique strategies and solutions. They're always testing new methods, keeping pace with industry trends, and willing to take calculated risks.

Business Acumen: Understanding the business or industry you're working with can significantly aid SEO efforts. By knowing what your primary audience values, the terminology they use, and what kind of content they prefer, you can tailor your SEO strategy to be more effective.

It's important to remember that SEO is an ever-changing landscape, and successful professionals in this field are always ready to learn, adapt, and grow.

I think the most important part of SEO is "taking seriously each part". What I mean with that? You can't just focus on website speed or keywords or great content or html or social media or linkbuilding or etc...There isn't one thing that if you do, your website is going to rank very high in the search engines. It is a whole thing strategy. Hard work is required. :)
Keep learning!
